Opportunities and Business Support (JOBS), the project
funded by USAID Bangladesh and implemented by the IRIS
Center at the University of Maryland has launched its
website ().
Mr. Imran Shauket, Project Director of the JOBS Project
launched the website at their offices. Mr. Asif U. Ahmed
Deputy Director (Programs), Ms. Erika H. Kiess, Deputy
Director (Administration) and Nasira B. Mansoor,
Manager-Communications, JOBS Project were also present
during the occasion.
The
objectives of developing the web site are to; disseminate
information, share information about the project, its
sectoral work, its clients and partners, and a list of its
achievements, activities and publications.
JOBS was established in 1997 and since then the Project has
been working to assist Bangladeshi enterprises to expand
their sales in domestic and international markets. JOBS
achieves this through a variety of interrelated activities,
including: identifying sub-sectors that offer considerable
growth potential; selecting and building the capacity of
small and medium enterprises to manufacture diversified
export products; coordinating skill development training for
workers; coordinating the provision of international
technical assistance; assisting in product development and
enhancement; developing international and domestic markets;
facilitating loans, and coordinating technical assistance to
the government to develop a supportive policy and regulatory
environment.
JOBS over
the past few years, has also been putting added emphasis on
the development of the ICT sector through its support of the
ICT private sector and ICT-related human resource
development and education, policy formation and regulatory
reform.
JOBS
Project, currently in its seventh year of operation, has to
date generated over $70 million in export sales in 14
different sectors such as handmade paper, footwear, home
textile, leather goods, floor covering, personal protective
equipment, light electrical, diversified jute products,
coconut coir, agribusiness & livestock, ICT, jewelry etc. as
continued to expand markets, increase exports, and ensure
the sustainability of Bangladesh’s small and medium sized
businesses.
