Bangladesh has a long, rich heritage of
weaving, and its unique local textiles and production techniques
have survived over the years despite the introduction of modern
artificial fibers. Now, with increased consumer interest in natural
fibers and hand crafted products, Bangladesh’s hand woven carpets,
braided jute rugs, and coconut coir mats are enjoying increased
demand in international markets. Braided jute rugs are produced from
100% natural fibers, making them durable, bio-degradable, and
environmentally friendly. Hand woven rugs are produced from a
combination of cotton thread and jute fibers.
JOBS has worked in Bangladesh’s floor
covering sector since 2002, and has had considerable success in
developing strategies to promote its importance as an export growth
sector for the country. For example, the Project has identified a
significant opportunity in the fact that German joint ventures
currently operating in India are interested in switching their
operations to Bangladesh. While high taxes are imposed on carpets
produced in India, in Bangladesh the sector enjoys cash incentives
and convenient export facilities that allow for substantial
increases in exports. The labor intensive nature of the industry
also favors Bangladesh: while labor costs continue to increase in
India and other more developed countries, the plentiful supply of
workers here means we can offer very competitive prices. During the
last two years JOBS has assisted a number of entrepreneurs to
improve their operations by bringing in market experts and designers
from abroad, providing skill development training for their workers,
establishing clusters for backward linkage, and facilitating their
participation in international fairs.
