Dr. Thierry van Bastelaer is co-Team Leader of IRIS's Market
Institutions Team, and the Director of its Integrated Financial
Services programs. A political economist, he has led the design
and implementation of programs of small enterprise development,
microfinance, e-commerce policy reform, social capital, and
economic liberalization. He manages several large technical
assistance projects, including USAID's Accelerated
Microenterprise Advancement Project--Enabling Environment
component, and the JOBS Project, a $12m employment creation
project in Bangladesh, which focuses on support to micro-,
small, and medium size enterprises and the policy environment in
which they operate. Dr. van Bastelaer is the main architect with
Betty Wilkinson of IRIS's program of reform of the legal
environment for microfinance services in developing and
transition economies. He has played a leading role in the
conceptual and empirical advances of the concept of social
capital, and is co-editor of two books on the topic. His current
research interests focus on collective action, microfinance
competition, and social capital.
